Ya, the plugin causes lots of problems. It can mangle headers on XHR to sites that aren't using https. Spent a day debugging problems that turned out to just be https everywhere.

Have you looked into ting? (ting.com) They currently only have android, and they are just using Sprint's network but they are month to month and it is super easy to turn off data.

You might also try adjusting the number of books that load at one time from 10 to 12 or something divisible by 4 so that you load complete shelves and don't have half a shelf loaded.
