I'm sorry but you are either implying that the leaks were fake or that 'parents and friends' are always right. In both cases I'll disagree heavily.
But a lot of lawsuits have depended on these phone records.
The US government doesn't care about privacy, they care about other nations spying on their citizens. It is evident from all the leaks of NSA/CIA that they spy more on their citizens than other nations'.
Proton mail and OpenStreetMap(not as good as Google Maps but still decent) are proper alternatives.
Sadly, 'your local NSA' is probably working with other nations' NSA. It has been already mentioned before in the leaked documents that governments use other nations' intelligence agencies to spy on their own people…
