I recall using Stumbleupon quite a bit to find random sites. I think there always has been some sort of 'social' for site discovery (Fark/Slashdot etc), it was just more diverse than it is now.
Thunderbird works really well as an RSS reader. It's only because I read my feeds on multiple devices that I use a hosted service.
