Agreed. I translate such excuses to "that sounds like work which costs money and you can't make us, so go screw." Apparently top talent need access to unethical shortcuts to success. Not so shocking.
Assuming that's a real quote: Of course they "can't".... at the time they said that. They "won't" given that they "can't". They needed to engineer a mechanism to do so. From a purely literal perspective they were honest.
