Does the whole "onto usb stick" really mean much these days? I'd hope you could get a software stack onto 8 (16, 32, ...) GB of storage. Also, that article is quite light on details (as has already been stated)
As a third year Ph D student I'd say that it's on the student to make the most out of their time in school. Part of that is networking, meeting people in related fields and mastering some of the softer sciences…
