Wick editor is the closest modern thing to traditional flash ie. Flash 8. I've made a fully animated pixel platformer tech demo type thing in it, it's somewhat capable.
You can't really hold an open source project like this to such a high level of scrutiny, all development was likely done in people's spare time with no compensation.
