Most compilers are written for fun. That’s the point of the thread. Also, there is a lot of modern language research is done from the “lens” (heh) of Haskell, or at least the Glasgow school.
Wadler stated in a talk somewhere that he was inspired by that book, but thought Agda may be more approachable.
My computer science cohort was very small. That’s why I don’t expect to see many Lamar folks on these types of forums.
