Unfortunately, paying someone well does not necessarily mean you're going to end up quality either.
It's worth stating that this is the MailingListsController and there is no mention of a MailingList. It seems to me like some functionality in the "before" example could live in the MailingList class.

Underscore.js has a function called once for this exact purpose.
I've been using analytical with our Rails backend which seems to achieve something similar: https://github.com/jkrall/analytical
Inheritance is not always the right solution.

We just started using steak and it is slowly replacing cucumber in our application. We found the translation between English -> Step Definitions -> Ruby to be too onerous, especially after our stakeholders…
It also gives you the nice syntax "keywords", feature, background, and scenario.
