Why update if you want to keep linux as it is? I am sure there are a few LTS distros around that will stay systemd free for the next few years.
Make it neutrally stable, e.g. Kp = 1, Kd = 0, Ki = 0; Click x to the right of its standstill position. When it is halfway there click x below its current position.
Looking at the source this is actually a PD controller, which makes sense for a simple simulation like this.
