I've done it, I realized I wanted to keep being an IC but still have promo/comp growth opportunities, and only some companies do that well without requiring you to hop onto the mgmt path.
Ruby on Rails. Still have yet to find something else that requires such little configuration and is so complete.
GitHub does hire in many countries outside of the US: https://github.com/about/careers
Click tracking, it's very important to companies like Google to do that.
