It can be done easily. I would say it will be done in the future by governments and forced on us. The amount of control a government would have with a forced cryptocurrency is the only problem I see.
Bitcoin may be a finite supply but cryptocurrencies in general are infinite. So can you really say it is a fixed monetary system?

With the recent bust of AlphaBay we know bitcoin mixers are vulnerable. It looks like Monero will take over as the favorite cryptocurrency of new markets especially with I2P integration.
I believe it is forked from i2pd.
I would say the problem they are trying to solve is security settlement between different institutions. I guess right now each institution has their own database of who owns what and it's difficult to transfer ownership…
