People have learned to distrust all machines as unreliable, capricious and unredeeming. Most people attempt to minimize the relevance of computers in their life, despite the massive tidal forces that handily defeat any such sentiment.

Indeed, right here on HN, the very idea that many people simply do not like to use computers at all will raise an eyebrow or two as borderline unthinkable, so strong are these tidal forces, and so betrothed computing acolytes are to their parasitic machine twins.

This doesn't mean that regular people have the capability to step away from retaining limited skills as a novice computer user, but they instinctively deflect the degree control that any one entity (such as laptop, mobile device, online account, financial institution) can leverage against them, where possible, and minimize the damage that any single fault can inflict.

Use of computers is often begrudgingly required, in some cases legally enforced, and with that awareness of obligation and power diff...
