ESTA is tourism + business trip. Arguably a one time all-hands meeting is a business trip. Though I agree sharing all of this in public after all of the struggle he's been through isn't the smartest idea :)!
As a French citizen, I also "agreed" to pay my taxes last year :). I even paid the full amount I was being claimed. How generous of me.
