I travel a lot with my 13" MacBook Air and can't imagine wanting to deal with anything bigger and heavier.
I'd definitely say the 20% is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Anybody who has eaten raw and roasted cacao nibs should be able to easily identify the same flavors pervasively in chocolate, and which are from the raw cacao…
I live on a shared driveway with two other neighbors. The zoning laws in my town require an HOA for any shared driveways. So I technically live under an HOA. But we’ve all agreed to not fund it or bring it to life in…
I had an interaction with a raven in California that made me sure it has seen the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who. I was sitting on the ground, and it was behind me. It clearly wanted a bit of the sandwich I was eating,…
One of my son's old toys is up in some box in the attic. Whenever I go up there, about one in three times it says, "The lions says 'Roar'", when I'm walking back down the attic stairs. I don't know why that is what…
"These people are factually correct in everything they say" Are they? I don't know the German movement, but the talking points I hear coming from US BARF people seem to mostly be a mix of FUD, naturalistic fallacy,…
I know you meant it just as an off-hand joke, but sadly there are most definitely people who hate kittens.
I've made it a rule to only donate significant money (whatever "significant" might mean) to charities where I know the people and/or have visited them first hand. I love the idea of donating for a kid's education, and…
Touching someone when asking them to do something is a well known psychological trick. It immediately increases intimacy, which makes the person more likely to do what you ask. Though it can also backfire if the person…
I have essentially gone with option 2 in my Audi A3. Every time I turn the car on, it puts up a dialog that warns me that I've made the terrible, terrible decision to not allow remote data and forces me to say, "no, do…
I actually feel better about making edits if I know people may revert them. I don't have the time or interest to dig in deeply to what exactly they want, so I normally wouldn't contribute. But if I know people double…
> Only $dayjob relies on Windows anymore. I'm in the exact opposite situation as you. I managed late last year to switch at work to Debian full time on both my machines. The few older Windows only programs I need run…
I beat you to it by eight years. I was 16 in 1987 when I asked my father to lend me $5K to invest in Microsoft. It was at ~$0.30/share. That would have been around $8.5M today. He said no. To be fair though, he likely…
> I don’t think we have to judge countries by their countrysides. My least favorite place in the US is Manhattan, and my least favorite place in Japan is Tokyo. If I couldn't judge a country by its countryside, I…
> overlapping windows are a relic. I hope not. I've tried tiling and I just don't like it. I may be in the minority these days, and it may simply be my forty years of use patterns, but you'll have to take my overlapping…
> Trump, Hassett, etc are still blaming Biden for inflation caused by the tariffs I'm starting to see this backfire with a lot of "personal responsibility" type old-school republicans to whom I talk. They're getting fed…
This is too bad. I've got both their mill and their lathe, and they've been great for making replacement parts for antique clocks.
I still run across this to this day with GCC and Cortex-M code. The optimizer will occasionally decide to blow away loops that are clearly doing something.
> so presumably ability to cross-breed isn't part of the "new species" calculation? Considering people have interbred jaguars and leopards, and then interbred the female cubs with lions to get a lijagulep, I'm not sure…
> It'll take more effort tagging and identifying other tiger cats to see if they also belong to this particular one? This effort is actually already ongoing. This splashy headline that seems to have crushed it on…
> Maybe it was just my experience. It certainly hasn't been my experience visiting Ontario and Quebec. I've had nothing but good experiences. The Quebecois, especially in rural areas, are quite direct and I could maybe…
I don't know what the heck map data Uber uses, but it always sends cars to a road behind my house which would require them to drive through a swamp and then up a heavily wooded hill to get here. OSM had the exact same…
> Its the reality distortion field. (this term comes from the register) It actually comes right from Apple. Andy Hertzfeld, an early Apple employee, has claimed it was originally said in 1981 by another employee, Bud…
Why do you claim it is an Americanism? The term 'scare-quotes' was coined by a British philosopher, Elizabeth Anscombe, who references her use of them in a 1956 essay. This would imply that they were in use in British…
