There are plenty of sites that use the github.io domain, though using a custom domain makes a lot more sense. Especially in conjunction with Cloudflare. I also use Github gist to generate individual landing pages.
+1 on this. Code some project on a pro bono basis using the latest tech, then use that as your ticket.
