You'd need to install the right Python version though, and even with something like pyenv you might need to install system packages. It really isn't as portable as one might wish.
I understand your point, however I've come to enjoy the separation between Git concepts (Repository) and GitLab features (Project, Issues, CI/CD). That said, I still find GitHub's UI and UX more appealing.
