This is an interesting problem, I wonder if Photoshop or The Gimp actually do something fancy here. There shouldn't be much of a problem replacing files when the files never get bigger and uncompressed ZIPs are used…
The file extension actually makes a difference here, CBRs are RAR compressed archives.

I think you misunderstood the intentions here, the game was not supposed to be a demonstration of what is possible with HTML5. The author probably just wanted to show what he does to practice his programming skills.

My impression was that it had to do with the gamma correction of PNG images. The 4chan thumbnail generator seems to ignore the gamma correction while the browser does not.
The article makes it sound like she is some kind of genius but using http://www.memegenerator.net/ is not rocked science. Pretty clever though.
