Ask HN: When to change jobs to maximize value?

I'm leading an engineering group that I grew. We've had some nice successes recently and we continue to grow. However, I'm getting hints that I might be hitting a ceiling on compensation. I enjoy the work and the team, but I'd also like a step up somewhere else. How to time this? Wait until the current growth plateaus? Jump after a big win? Use the current internal opportunities as a point of negotiation for a new position?
