I never have and never will understand the mindset of people who always want that extra dollar. These CEOs have billions of dollars, but they won't hesitate to inconvenience the customer if it means they get a few more dollars a year. These are people who will never run out of money, and their childrens children will never run out of money, but still they are out to swindle every dollar out of every customer they can.
You need some bases in philosophy to understand that. Moleynieux tried to explain it in two videos for the general public. Your question is answered by the second answer of this video (although the whole is interesting): https://youtu.be/MYY11Ro4h54
I get the sentiment but it is a CEOs job to make as much money for the shareholders as possible. Its not just their own salary and bonus CEOs are trying to grow they are trying to get top dollar for shareholders as well.
It may be a moral/ethical failure on a larger scale of philosophy/principle, but in capitalism/the market, this is the CEO doing his job, essentially. Competition is supposed to step in somewhere, but as we've seen in many industries, it often appears to mean nothing if all of the competitors agree to act in a similar way, or if the company still gets enough paying customers regardless.
He is maximizing profits/value for shareholders, which in today's world is often point #1 for many companies because that's how the system has been designed to function and is what it requires of its participants.
Airline seat prices, adjusted for inflation, are a lot lower than they used to be in the golden era of North American airlines. Yes seats are crappy and you have to pay for food and luggage, if you're not flying with a lot of mileage points. But adjusted for inflation, costs for something typical like a Seattle to Boston flight are like half of what it cost in 1982.
