This to me seems like a good thing for Vietnam. There will be alot of people now who having lived in America will be able to bring their skills and expertise back to Vietnam.
I'm sure there are plenty of hospitals and doctors offices that could really use some extra professionals.
Well retirement age should be even better, they can bring their capital with them, that should give Vietnam a good boost to their GDP.
Well automation will lead to some suicides no? It already has lead to many farmers (Some I knew personally) taking their own lives but it's ok because it leads to economic growth which benefits us all.
I don't think just because someone will commit suicide, doesn't mean the whole thing is bad and gross.
I don't think the parent comment was implying that any policy or action (no matter how broad) that causes (no matter how indirectly) people to commit suicide (no matter how few) is in-arguably bad and gross. I think the parent was pointing that out as one relevant point among multiple. The overall picture, taken rationally and as a whole, to me personally seems like one where the cons outweigh the pros, as opposed to the entire generic concept of the history of automation, which contains many individual cases where things may have been handled well or poorly, and is therefore too broad to compare to a single act of policy like this. To me, this looks like something that could have had some reasonable incarnation, but as it stands, it appears to be an unthoughtful, unnecessary act driven by hatred.
The war ended in 1975, 43 years ago. So if you fled the war then and were an adult you're quite old now. If you're still of working age (like the people you reference here) that means you were likely a child when you left the country. I'm not sure that being forced to go back to a place you have been to in over four decades is a great deal for you. This move by the White House makes no sense and seems like it's intended to stick it to immigrants for no reason at all.
stick it to criminal "immigrants" because they are criminals and we don't want them. As they are the subject of a deportation order, it's a stretch to call them immigrants.
How can you call yourself a christian and also expel refugees? How can you say you support religious liberty but send Degar christians to their deaths by vietnamese communists? It’s just so much pointless sufferring. No one voted for djt to kick these few people out. Trump’s ideology is the opposite of conservatism—it’s fascism.
That said, this is a hard problem. These people are not technically citizens of the US, but of course Vietnam doesn't want them back. Trump seems to be following the letter of the law, but maybe not the spirit (I don't have enough context here). The article isn't in-depth about the breakdown of the demographic, nor does it really cite any valuable sources. The reader is left to their own biases, mostly, to draw a conclusion.
The (IMO poorly written) article implies that not only are Vietnamese origin criminals who got here before 1995 eligible for deportation, but ALL Vietnamese immigrants who got here before 1995 are as well.
Older Vietnamese-Americans have always staunchly voted Republican, at least where I grew up (Orange County, California). I wonder how many people have warned the administration that they're targeting a loyal voting bloc.
The older Vietnamese community is one of the few minority blocs that Trump hasn't alienated. I wonder why he's doing this now. Could it be that Orange County went completely blue in November and he's discounting them for 2020?
If you take an unreasonable and extreme extrapolation of the DHS statement, you can claim the stated reasoning seems to allow that, but I wouldn't bet money on your being right.
There is no misunderstanding, there is deliberately made up untruths.

This is callous and gross. It's going to ruin lives. People are going to commit suicide rather than leave.

The white house is moving to disenfranchise people. Starting with the most powerless groups, children and refugees, and then moving upwards.

Other sources like https://qz.com/1493761/trump-is-preparing-to-deport-thousand... indicate that the stated reasoning seems to allow that, but Trump's administration hasn't made itself available to confirm.
If this isn't a simple misunderstanding of what Trump is saying, then this is going to be a huge issue. There are a lot of people affected.
