I used vimperator and used vimium a lot. The commands I like the most:

f - gives every link a short(1-2 char long) command. If you type it it will open that link

Ctrl-a/x: adds/substracts one to the last number in the current URL then refresh the page

Depends what kind of browsing you do. If most of it is text-based and you do a lot of reading, JS off + a keyboard navigation add-on like tridactyl/vimium etc is the smoothest for me. And it's as good on a 6 year old laptop as it is on a brand new threadripper PC.
