Yugoslavia was so ahead of its time in so many ways. Shame it ended the way it did.
As someone who was born in Yugoslavia I have a feeling that science was more trusted.

In 1972 Yugoslavia had a smallpox outbreak and it was dealt with quickly. It was a different kind of disease, but still.

Now my country is richer than Portugal, but has 33% less vaccinated people.

They dealt it with quickly in China now too, for the same reasons.

Maybe but I'm not sure it would matter in 1972 Yugoslavia. I doubt individuals had much choice to cooperate, no matter what they believe, with government action to deal with small pox .

Not sure if it was at that time. But I know Yugoslavia had in some places during an outbreak military on the street with permission to shoot anyone in the leg if they refused orders to stay home.
it was an authoritarian government sure, but it wasn't all bad. US at that time was dropping napalm on people
I think Portugal's per capita GDP exceeds that of any former Yugoslav republic by a factor of 2 or more. Are you referring to something else?
Wow, you are right. Slovenia totally escaped me. For some reason I don't associate Slovenia with Yugoslavia. In my mind it was always it's own thing. Maybe there was less fighting during the dissolution and we didn't hear as much in the news.
There was basicly zero fighting. And slovenia was already before the breakup the richest state of yugoslavia
Its war for independence is called Ten-Day War and it had <100 casualties. Still not as good as Macedonia's independence (0 casualties), but not comparable to Croatia or Bosnia neither.
Like building nuclear bunkers that ate significant portions of its GDP and nowadays can be used as tourist attractions or mushroom production grounds.
