Warframe also used to have something similar, you can breed animals to act as companions and helpers during missions. If you didnt spend resources on them they would eventually degrade and die after 20 or so days
I remember Fable 3 (or maybe it was 2?), where when you finally got ownership of the main city, you could start collecting taxes from the citizens which would accrue while you weren't playing. It meant that every time you played you'd get a notification on how much fake money you had passively gained.
This is like the opposite of that, where when you log in the game tells you how much real money you lost.
and there i avoided "buying" a house for in-game coins (no cash) in lord of the rings online because i'd risk losing it if i didn't play for half a year.
and sort of related, telegram deletes your account if you don't use it for a year (or less, but a year is the longest configurable time).
it's kind of reasonable, since they want to free up space used by dead accounts, but still short enough to introduce a small level of anxiety.
If your friend’s Telegram account gets deleted you still have access to the whole chat history. Idk if it is possible to restore the deleted account though.

A game that does not respect your time is not worth playing.
