Interesting, but could also be related to the OLED modern television, that handles way better the dark and contrast.

Director's cut is for those people, let that edition be hardly visible; the rest shouldn't suffer

The real problem are the disgusting sound mixes that make you not hear voices and have your ears explode when a car passes by.

A trend with Real consequences : I so often check my computer screen luminosity. As a side note I find sound level on YouTube and netflix very low. I don't remember having to turn all the sound slider from the youtube or Netflix player to my speaker to the max in the past. Now I have to do it systematicaly, and I don't have any audition problem.
Pacific Rim and a recent Godzilla had their fight scenes in the dark, so in those cases I'd surmise it's to conceal CGI shortcomings.
