The thing is, the author isn't wrong, he's just not right for the reasons he thinks. Any good lie has a kernel of truth to it. Suburbs are the result of "ethnic conflict" - white flight from desegregated cities and racist urban planning policies designed to deny resources to black communities and neighborhoods[0][1]. He paints himself as the victim when in fact he's the beneficiary.
He said the quiet part out loud, but most people who live in the 'burbs by choice do so for the same reasons, even if they themselves aren't conscious of it.
