Why do you doubt his main contribution would be technical? I don't know much about him, but he definitely has the aptitude and the interest, so I would expect he could be a great contributor.
Sergey’s return to an active role at Google strikes me as a bittersweet omen.
Sweet in the sense that he’s returning to form for the first time in a while. He’s rekindling a connection so important to the early success of Google that I think it puts a lot of hope into people’s eyes.
Bitter in the sense that it feels like a parent moving in with their child who is now fully grown and just experienced a nasty divorce. The former paragraph reeks of romanticism in the rhetorical sense. A chef has no legacy if his good cooking dies with then. Why should they suddenly step in now? Why have Sundar around if you don’t trust him with the most important part of your company?
I feel you; i think sports metaphors are tired, but it feels like when Joe Gibbs was brought back to the (then) Redskins. Let's hope this is a more successful endeavor.

When Bill left, he just... left; good or bad, Microsoft ticked on without him, and nowadays I think it has flourished, imho.
Speaks poorly for Google if its founder can't retire in peace... or maybe I am being harsh?
