On a personal note. My partner is doing the same. Sadly this job is not viewed as a real job in most parts of the USA (where I live). It’s a damn shame. If anything it’s looked down upon by large swaths of the society.
It's because modern society uses income/GDP as the only metric for value.
It's a stark difference to basically every other point in history. This'll probably be seen as how we look at smoking today. It shouldn't be any surprise that when both parents are mostly absent and taking high stress jobs, the children won't be as mentally healthy. Mentally unhealthy kids become mentally unhealthy adults, and that leads to this downwards spiral we see in society what with mentally ill people going into law enforcement and management. Even with all the new pills, they're not curing the root causes.
Totally agree. I am all for capitalism but its reached a point where it’s completely unsustainable. We need Capitalism 2.0, which has profit but also other equally important goals of sustainability and community wellbeing.
Since about the early-mid-20th Century, the dominant economic system has been a divergence from capitalism-as-originally described, specifically limiting the expression of the property rights of capital holders to enable goals of community well-being and sustainability as assessed by the community through, generally, representative democratic means to be addressed and systematically prioritized alongside capital.
Its often distinguished from capitalism-in-the-strict-sense as “the modern mixed economy” or something along those lines; its popularly still called capitalism, but to the extent that's accurate its already Capitalism 2.0, diverging from 1.0 in the exact direction you lay out.
That’s super interesting. I would like to learn more about this divergence as what I have said is something that felt common sensical to me. Can you recommend some resources?
Also if the what you are describing is true then we prolly need more divergence than what we currently have.
I am also curious (this is specifically about USA) how effective these limiting of ownership expressions might be if bribery was not legally permitted (lobbying). Like for example imagine the policies and the quality of life of parents if there was a “National Association of Parents” that advocated for the masses. Think powerful like NRA but for parents and children. Call me an immigrant but it baffles me that people of this country don’t have something like this.
I feel this is one field that is begging a lot of trainings but even the most generous society does not offer and mandate that.
We have a son and we are basically just dragging on. I think it would be easier if one if us stays at home but financially it is impossible. And Canada is already more generous than the US.
I also think we should have a proper social worker system that gives some help to new parents until the kids go into daycare. At least, they should help new parents make mandatory appointments and check general condition if the kids. Unfortunately I doubt such workers would have a satisfactory salary. After all, like some IT units, they are not "profit center".
I totally agree - but its sad the answer is invariably "her" with the woman having to stop their career to raise children and the reason is nearly always the husband earns more
My wife has had to stop her career to home educate my autistic daughter as the education system failed her. The key decision on who does the home education was economic, although she is doing a much better job than i ever would
When I look at the facebook groups for others in the same situation its always the woman stopping her career
I've never thought about who I know that's the smartest before.... it's either my friend who works on firmware for cable modem head end stuff, who used to be a volunteer fireman in his free time, along with raising a family
Or... the other friend who used to do everything, EE, MD, Aviation mechanic, instructor, pilot, avionics repair, computers, law enforcement, but is now in declining health, and I help him fix old radio gear, test equipment, cesium beam atomic clocks, etc.
I don't have a big circle, but in general the smartest people didn't seem be fixated on work and coding outside their 8 hours of work. Maybe that makes them more creative and better problem solvers in the end?

Back then you have the War Trade Board, OSS, etc which had a lot of powered to deal with extreme situations.
