>> The company had been under scrutiny following an incident in early October when one of its cars struck a pedestrian that had just been hit by another. The first car threw the pedestrian into path of the Cruise autonomous vehicle. After striking the pedestrian, the Cruise AV attempted to pull off to side of the road to avoid causing an obstruction.
Wow, what wording…
Once again, this was a hit and run by a human driver who has still not been held accountable.
Cruise is still at fault because they dragged the pedestrian for about 20 feet instead of stopping then failed to show that to the dmv which was very deceptive. That's why they lost their permit. They lied to public officials.
The next paragraph explains the problem with the Cruise AV.
>> The [Cruise] vehicle evidently did not detect that the injured pedestrian was trapped underneath the vehicle. The person, who has not been identified, was critically injured after being dragged slowly across the asphalt for about 20 feet, according to documents related to the incident. The person was reported to have sustained serious injuries.
This recall is worth it if pedestrians are no longer dragged along underneath an AV.
If a human being had done that, they are going to jail for murder. Not manslaughter, it would easily be a murder charge. Cruise losing their license is getting of easy here.
> The incident occurred on October 2, 2023 at 9:29 PM PDT in San Francisco. A Cruise AV named Panini, operating in driverless autonomous mode, was at a complete stop at a red light. A dark colored Nissan Sentra was stopped in the adjacent lane to the left of the AV. When the light turned green, the Nissan Sentra and the AV entered the intersection.
> Against a red light, a pedestrian entered the crosswalk on the opposite side of Market Street across from the vehicles, passed completely through the AV’s lane of travel, then stopped mid-crosswalk in front of the Nissan Sentra. The Nissan Sentra then tragically struck and propelled the pedestrian into the path of the AV.
> The AV biased rightward before braking aggressively, but still made contact with the pedestrian. The AV detected a collision, bringing the vehicle to a stop; then attempted to pull over to avoid causing further road safety issues, pulling the individual forward approximately 20 feet. The driver of the Nissan Sentra fled the scene after the collision.
> Currently, the human driver responsible for the incident is still at large and we shared details with the San Francisco police and fire departments, as this was an ‘in progress’ crime by a hit-and-run human driver against another road user.
So much went right and wrong here. The pedestrian was crossing on a red light. The other car hit them, and fled the scene. Then they fell in the way of Cruise AV, which attempted to move away from the pedestrian, but couldn’t avoid them completely. Then unfortunately, misread the situation and attempted to pull-over, not knowing there was a human stuck underneath.
Regardless, this was a horrible accident and my thoughts and prayers go towards the pedestrian’s recovery.
They soon will be toast ... they rushed out their training wheel robot AI cars (knowing they were crap) to try and kill it / win the market in the same fashion Uber did. Fake it before you make it is never an ethos to be used in this tech realm. At least they got their robot training wheel cars off the road before killing an innocent life like Uber did. Unfortunately, a pedestrian was mangled because oh we forgot to think about what to do when a person is lodged underneath the car yet no worry we will push out a software update and keep learning with every person who is hurt (why i detest this tech cause innocent people have and will continued to be harmed all in the name of technological progress and making tech folks/investors richer).

Can you seriously not comprehend how horrifying that is?
It first reached a full stop after hitting the pedestrian.
Only then the car decided to pull over and dragged the pedestrian, ending with it's wheel on the pedestrian.
This is reportedly what caused the major injuries.

Cruise is now doing layoffs (some employees will bring out the daggers) and hiring PR folks when they should and will throw in the towel https://www.forbes.com/sites/cyrusfarivar/2023/11/08/crisis-...
