I'm no fan of Elon Musk or Tesla, but this is just a woman who decided not to use the manual release so she could make a video saying that she was stuck.

Typical influencer bs.

To be fair, chances of Tesla refusing warranty due to small print in the manual about not using manual release during fw upgrades: non-zero.
There is also that... a fair point.
She could have used the manual release to exit the car, but she said she did not want to, so no real story here.

Does the manual release have the potential to damage the car?

We've had a couple generations of people being warned "do not power down your system when it's updating" and stories of bricked devices because of bad updates. I don't think it's unreasonable to assume you might break something if you interrupted an in progress update.
