Some of it's earliest uses were introduced by Brett Mogilefsky (https://www.mobygames.com/person/1675/bret-mogilefsky/credit...), the lead programmer on Grim Fandango while at LucasArts.edit: He was pulled on stage impromptu at a GDC decades ago to introduce the concept which was how it grew legs.
