Flip me. Typical guardian type drivel. If AI is going to take over I’m yet to see any glimmer - like not even one single glimmer from any SOTA, local, local ablated, or otherwise dodgily trained models. At all. They’re a probability engine but the human brain can’t compute so we jump to woo woo shit. Brilliant.
I wouldn't think informed people are afraid of an "evil AI", it's about then complying to prompts in ways the prompter wouldn't expect - because of weak target systens, or the agent was not sandboxed enough, or sandboxing was done carelessly. All current hacking cases are like this, imagine the same with weapon systems.

Ugh, why am I not surprised they are the same crazies (most likely funded by the same shady NGOs).
A lot of young people are pretty unhappy with the state of the world and the future they’ve been given. I don’t really blame them for targeting various different things that represent that future.
Yeah I don't think their actions will do anything to change the course of history, but I sure do empathize with them.
We're here breaking record after record for temperatures all around the globe, we're seeing the effects of our industry and resource usage wreaking havoc everywhere. Record droughts. Record melt. Record rainfall. Record storms. And now the most powerful country in the world has a guy in charge who doesn't even care the world is going to shit. And at the same time global fossil fuel emissions are still rising.
It shouldn't come as a surprise some people will channel their feelings to actions trying to change something.
AI datacenters are just the next energy-guzzling target for these people.
> The state of the world is not great, and the things they are acting against are some of the most directly responsible.
AI companies are directly responsible for the state of the world not being great? Are you serious? There are much better ways to make the world a better place than lashing out like this.
AI companies and their tech elite proponents are the bastards du jour. They'll be targeted until something worse inevitably comes along to take the heat off.
I don't think anyone is claiming that AI companies are responsible for the world as it is right now. That being said, most of the things heralded by AI CEO's will not benefit, but in fact harm, the working class.
You may not approve of lashing out, but many people are left with little choice and not a lot of options. Bartenders, like the one mentioned in the article, can't all have meteoric political ascensions like AOC in the U.S.
Peaceful, pre-approved protests and marches are just block parties and parades. Great for networking and raising awareness, but not useful in influencing levers of power. Direct action is much more effective over time.

I don't think their approach is particularly impactful, but it's better than just quietly watching the world burn...
