To clarify for people in other countries. When a petition gets 100,000 swiss signers than the governement must respond with a suggestion. The petition and suggestion then go to referendum. The decision of the people is final and government must implement the decision as long as it doesn't impeach some basic rules.
The law in question has been updated to retain data for 12 months instead of 6 and authorizes the government to install Trojan type programs. Does anyone have more info on the Trojan type programs proposed?
The world's HN readers are now the LOBBYISTS of this petition! Yes, just like the corporate lobbyists in Washington - probably even more powerful considering our numbers.
All you have to do is LOBBY the sh*t out of your colleagues in Switzerland. Everybody knows somebody in Switzerland. If the whole world lobbies the people in Switzerland, that petition will reach Mach10, like yesterday.
EDIT: Why should you participate? You get to store your data in a western country that will continue to defend privacy and democracy.
really? this is great! thanks for the info. Do you have any link by hand which defines these rules? (i.e. what kind of permit do I have to have, does it differ from canton to canton? ...)
No links to hand I'm afraid, but I'm pretty sure that it's anything more permanent than a tourist visa. Don't think it varies by canton. I'll try and remember to dig about/ask my wife (sorry, just about to go to work..)
I don't think that we will have a successful large scale gov IT project like they had overseas. Still wasting our tax money for this kind of crap is shame.

EDIT 2: If anybody is on Slashdot or Reddit: please post about it there as well. Let's show them what the network effect is!
If you do, please post a the link here. If you don't, please post if you have an account there. Democracy says hi and thanks!

In German when you cannot write the umlaut, an e gets added to the letter that should have the umlaut.

To avoid redundancy.
