When people tell me that the computers of today are better than the ones I started on, I remember that APL\SV never crashed, and considering the Personal Computers of the era, I ask them "How often did WordStar crash for you?" And if it did crash, you could fire it right back up by executing your favorite zero-length .COM file and save out a copy of your work for comparison with its autosave file. The computers of today are faster, but the quality of the software has declined considerably as people have concentrated on implementing flashy interfaces over solid functionality.
I have worn many hats during my career, but they all have these things in common: 1. You have to ship/deliver when you say you will. 2. You can't ignore customers' needs, and this includes fixing their problems. 3. If you leave a mess, someone is going to have to clean it up - of course, it's best not to leave a mess in the first place, but do document what you've done so the next guy will have ...
> Nobody uses anything but meters and seconds with metric in science. Sure, now. It took the loss of the Mars Climate Orbiter to end the Imperial madness at NASA.
Comparison shopping is difficult because the stores are allowed to get away with marking interchangeable items with wildly dissimilar units (type and/or magnitude), quoting per item, per ounce, per pound, per gram, per…
(Hi Chuck!) I find myself to be in the mathematician camp ("A materials scientist, a Physicist, and a Mathematician were sharing a hotel room when a fire broke out, waking the materials scientist...") when it comes to…
It was their "cheaper than gasoline" milk that got us in there. The overall quality of their offerings kept us going there. There are some specialty items that we have to go to our local grocery for. From what I…
People here in Kansas City will gift their paid-for cart to someone else rather than leaving it in the parking lot. From what I've seen on YT, cart rental is a Euro in Europe.
That takes me back 33 years...
If they're actually local and speak English well enough to be understood over a crummy cell phone connection, I'll keep in touch. If not, I whack the Spam button.
Really. Identical error and debugging messages that might as well have all said "Foo!" across a 300,000+ LOC subsystem.
Really? I give location and context and the Why of the message. I make sure that every message is unique (unlike the code I changed in a certain once-prominent US firm's three-letter operating system) as well. I clearly…
"Great engineers do everything I do."
Failing to list the #1 reason: Your VC could decide that they want their money back at any moment. (#2 would be bad employees/decisions foisted on you by those handing you money)
I like how he rode in a friend's care.
Given that physicians average about US$225k, I'd say that this information is suspect.
It's loads of fun, especially when you have dedicated chillers and sufficient power for everything. However, as you come to the realization that your C-level execs negotiated forever contracts for keeping data and…
Followed by Breadless Sandwiches of the Future?
"Froth" as in lots of bubbles? One little bubble collapsing wouldn't necessarily blow out the rest, unlike a singular bubble. Or "Froth" as in "frothing at the mouth" (from insanity and/or rabies)? Given the silliness,…
She needs to analyze the sayings of Lord John Whorfin: * History is-a made at night. * Character is what you are in the dark. * Laugh while you can, monkey-boy! * Home... home is where you wear your hat. I'm sure it…
Or if you're suddenly going from your walking pace to 20-30-65-75MPH, you probably aren't the fastest human on the planet. You got on a bus and forgot to turn the darn thing off when you reached your bus stop. Just like…
The glaring omission I see in the article is any mention of BMORG's photography policy, which is much stricter than US law. Some of the FPV ROVs may be up there just to fly around…but it seems as if most of them exist…
Although it was nice to see, the Society of Women Engineers http://societyofwomenengineers.swe.org/ was in full advocacy swing at that point, with strong chapters at the major engineering universities, encouraging women…
And this seems to hand out a wealth of information as to why they haven't gotten there yet: http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/1nxtyb/nuclear_f...
You're right. In my head "ignition"=fusion, so I was auto-translating as I was skimming. They're looking for something slightly different, and probably using energy output (among other things) as indications of…
While they have had problems in the recent past: https://www.sciencenews.org/article/ignition-failed ~~ They've since had ignition: http://www.independentnews.com/news/article_792110c0-2c5b-11... ~~ [I'm positive that…
> It's hard to find good music in the Bay Area, especially live blues. Surely you've missed finding out about JJ's…or you live on the opposite side of the bay from them. Long, long ago, in a valley far, far away, people…
Yes, it is. However, they will probably lie to you about the cash they have on-hand, their burn rate, and when they'll hit break-even.
